Craftable Weapons (weapon plans)
I am sure crafting has come up on multiple thread befor, but GW has never been much of a crafting game, as far as weapons go. Perhaps this next idear could solve this.
Drop rates for upgraded weapons is dropped, instead purple, gold, green weaponplans drop. When you use your identification tool on them, it lists which recourses are needed to craft the weapon. Take the plan and the resources needed to a weapon smith (or introduce crafting kits) you craft the weapon. ,
You will still be able to salvage any upgrades from the weapon after you craft it.

So you want to add a cost to all weapon drops....what does that accomplish?

They could have unique skins maybe?
That's what weapon crafters do, really :P

Wait, so what exactly is the point of this? Having a 'need plans' requirement is only going to make weapon crafting worse than it already is. All that needs to be done is to drop the stupidly money cost. 5k excluding materials for a max weapon without bonuses? I don't think so. You could get a good green for that much (Warrior weapons anyway).

Meh, sounds too much like WoW. I hope they don't add this to GW2 either. And what would be the point of crafting it to salvage/take it apart again?

Rather than plans, why not expand the role of weaponsmiths in the game?
Say I want a medium rarity sword. Rather than go farm the region the sword comes from, I go to the weaponsmith there and pay the required materials, and viola, new sword?
At present, weaponsmiths tend to carry only one skin per continent...making them worthless. Why not expand them to carry everything of Basic quality (from Tolkano's list) from the region?
And while we are on the subject, perhaps the Eternal Weaponsmith could actually do something useful, and craft Fancy quality weaponry?

I don't really like the idea of weapon plans, because I think it would add an odd complication to an already not very good crafting system. Though I do think crafting needs a serious overhaul. I've never understood why you can't craft gold weapons, with whatever stats you'd like. The whole system is already available in the game. They could make the material requirements ridiculous, like fissure armor or something, but at least you could get what you want. I've found the random "collectors' and "weapon smiths" in outpost to be completely useless.

I think it is fine the way it is and should remain the same in GuildWars II.

If this was a way to change the skin of a crafter that has common skins (for example, make the weapon crafter in Varsburg armory craft amber weapons or the one in Vabbi weapons with the 'Vabbian' prefix) I would agree with this, since there are many skins that are pretty common, but almost all crafters in each campaign share the same skin. Each region could craft weapons in a common skin that easily drops in the area instead using the same skin for the whole campaign.
But using one plan to craft one weapon... it would be easier just to get the weapon itself.

Nothing, tra la la?

Too much like wow, yes.
And agreed it would add too much complication and such to the game.
I do like the idea of Shriketalon - having the crafter's usefullness expanded though.

maybe more skin choices to weapon-smiths, and i could care less if they're blue or gold, only time i craft one of those things is when i'm in a pinch and need something for a particular build that i'm testing.
